Leilehua was one of the artists invited to record with Jesse Colin Young for his Aloha E 9-11 tribute. She provided the oli (Hawaiian chant). During the recording, done at Jesse's coffee farm in Kona, the studio window was open. Doves few past, and their call was captured during the session. Manu has been a performing artist for some 30 years, but had not recorded
until this year. After meeting Native American flutist Troy De Roche, the
two men began performing together and collaborating on original pieces for
flute and guitar. Manu is deeply immersed in the culture and traditions of his islands, which reflects in his musical compositions on guitar and `ohe hano ihu, traditional Hawaiian flute. Born to Richard and Eliza Josiah, his family roots go back to Koko`iki, Kohala on the Island of Hawaii. Being the son of a military father, Manu had the opportunity to live abroad, most notably in Stuttgart, West Germany where he was born. Reared in Honolulu and Kohala during his early childhood, he later grew up in Washington State where he developed a great
appreciation for the indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest. As an adult, he joined the US Navy and traveled to many foreign countries including Iceland, Norway, Germany, Guam, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Jakarta, New Guinea and Vietnam. An avid motorcycle rider and proud owner of “Kahekili”, his 2002 Harley Davidson Ultra Glide Classic, he expressed his joy of riding in some of his most popular compositions, such as Old Saddle Road. His first recordings, presented by Troy De Roche in Journey Across the Water, may be purchased at www.songstick.com/music.html |
